THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP
DIOCESE NAMED IN LAWSUIT IN US DISTRICT COURT
The Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau has become aware it was named in a civil lawsuit representing 11 persons who allege sexual abuse by seven clergy reported to have occurred some 20 to over 50 years ago. Please find the attached Public Statement concerning the petition filed Sept. 13, 2024, in US District Court. Given that the investigation is ongoing, the Diocese will not provide any additional information regarding the lawsuit. Any media or requests for comment or information should be directed to Leslie Eidson, diocesan Chief Communications Officer. Be advised that our sister Diocese of Jefferson City was visited by SNAP today (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests), where they wrote the names of the living accused priests on the sidewalk of a local church. They may come to southern Missouri. We've have various media set up at some of our facilities to shoot B-roll, not to engage staff. That said, no youth should be videotaped or photographed without the express permission of parents. For more information, the diocesan Media Policy may be found here. Please find the comprehensive diocesan Safe Environment Policy & Procedures here.

OFFICE OF CHILD & YOUTH PROTECTION
A great big THANK YOU to all of our pastors, principals, local safe environment coordinators, employees, and volunteers who have helped us collect the 2024-2025 Code of Conduct and those who have already submitted their background applications. So far, we've had about half of our 5,000 registered employees and volunteers complete the transition to the new background screening company. These transitions for currently active employees and volunteers cost the diocese $1.00 (one dollar) versus the $20 to $30 per person the "new applications" will cost when the current background expires--if you do the math, you'll see it's quite a significant difference!!!
Those clergy, employees and volunteers who have not yet completed the background application, please, please, please login to your VIRTUS account at https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/, click on the background box and complete that application as soon as possible. The process for new employees and volunteers will be much smoother from here on; when they register in VIRTUS, they will automatically be prompted to complete the background application and be assigned the required safe environment training, which can be completed Online, as well. Everyone must complete the background screening, the safe environment training, and submit the Code of Conduct at that time and annually after that, to be compliant and work and volunteer with minors and vulnerable adults in our parishes and schools.
As always, for any questions, please contact Shelly Ferry, Associate Safe Environment Coordinator, or Bill Holtmeyer, Director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection, at (417) 866-0841.

HANDBOOK on the CATECHETICAL ACCOMPANIMENT PROCESS
The Handbook on the Catechetical Accompaniment Process (CAP) is a resource developed by the Institute on the Catechesis, a work of the Subcommittee on the Catechism, of the USCCB. It is to help cultivate a culture of evangelizing catechesis in the United States. It includes catechetical goals for both adults and children, all seven sacraments, and covers the four pillars of the Catechism: Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer. The catechetical goals are grouped according to interior life, behavior, and cognitive goals. A section is also devoted to Prayers and Saints for Evangelizing Catechesis. A link to view and download the handbook is available here.
SHROUD of TURIN EXHIBIT
Did you know we have a replica of the Shroud of Turin? This 14x3-foot cloth bears a faint yellowed image of a crucified man and is believed by millions of Christians to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. Is it really the burial shroud of Jesus? Learn, wonder, and discover for yourself by bringing this exhibit to your parish. A link to sign-up for the exhibit is available here.

OFFICE OF RESPECT LIFE
VOTE NO on AMENDMENT 3
Amendment 3 will appear on Missouri's November ballot. If passed, it will eliminate parental notification or consent, put women at risk because a medical doctor is not required to approve or perform abortions, and open the door to taxpayer-funded abortions. Below is the UPDATED court ordered fair ballot language regarding Amendment 3:
A “yes” vote establishes a constitutional right to make decisions about reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives, with any governmental interference of that right presumed invalid; removes Missouri's ban on abortion; allows regulation of reproductive health care to improve or maintain the health of the patient; requires the government not to discriminate, in government programs, funding, and other activities, against persons providing or obtaining reproductive health care; and allows abortion to be restricted or banned after Fetal Viability except to protect the life or health of the woman.
A “no” vote will continue the statutory prohibition of abortion in Missouri.
We urge all Missourians of good will to advocate for the health and safety of women and their pre-born children and VOTE NO on Amendment 3.
VOTE NO on Amendment 3: RESOURCES FOR PARISHES & GROUPS
In collaboration with the Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) and the three other Missouri dioceses, we have provided the following materials for use in parishes and groups. A link to all resource materials may be found here (the content of which will updated as additional resources become available):

MARCELLUS WILLIAMS to be EXECUTED SEPT. 24, 2024
Williams is scheduled to be executed for the 1998 murder of Felicia Gayle, and has maintained his innocence throughout the process of his legal defense.
The evidentiary hearing of Aug. 21 found that due to improper handling by the prosecutor’s office, the murder weapon used to kill Felicia Gayle had no traces of Williams’ DNA. As a result, the lower court judge allowed Williams to renegotiate his sentence to life without parole. However, the Attorney General's office appealed the decision, and the Supreme Court of Missouri held that the lower court lacked the authority to accept a new plea. Now that Williams’ innocence claim has been rejected, his only remaining legal avenue of avoiding execution is a grant of clemency from the Missouri's governor. The Catholic Church is strongly opposed to the death penalty because it disregards the sanctity and dignity of human life. If you would like to contact Gov. Parson regarding Mr. Williams’ execution, you may reach his office via phone at (573) 751-3222 or contact him at: Contact the Governor's Office | Governor Michael L. Parson (mo.gov)
